VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM:
Vietnamese as a foreign language

1. GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Vietnamese Language Program of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, National University Ho Chi Minh City is designed to give intensive Vietnamese training to:

  • Foreign student who have been admitted to The College of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City or other universities in Vietnam.
  • Foreigners residing in Vietnam who intend to learn Vietnamese to meet their specific needs.
  • Foreign students or scholars abroad who intend to study Vietnamese intensively.
  • The Vietnamese Language Program offers four courses: elementary, low intermediate, high intermediate and advanced. They are offered in Fall semester, Spring semester and Summer session.

    2. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

  • Elementary Course : Beginning with the Vietnamese alphabet and sounds, this course puts stress on pronunciation, basic grammatical structures and vocabulary items, as well as basic conversation skills (300 hours).
  • Low Intermediate Course : In addition to structure and vocabulary, this course puts emphasis on conversation (150 hours).
  • Upper Intermediate Course : This course puts stress on writing and reading comprehension (150 hours).
  • Advanced Course : Focus is on extensive and comprehensive reading and expository writing so that the students can be prepared to attend college (or graduate school) in Vietnam (400 hours).
  • Vietnamese for specific Purposes :
  • Vietnamese for business & commerce;
  • Vietnamese for literature reading;
  • Vietnamese for history reading;
  • Formal & informal written Vietnamese;
  • Vietnamese for admission exams into colleges and universities.
  • 3. TERMS AND CLASS HOURS:

    a) Regular courses : There are two main terms and one summer session.

    Each term (or semester) consists of 17 weeks in which there are 16 academic weeks and one testing week. There is a two week holiday between the two main semesters.

    Fall term:
    From the beginning of September till January 31 st.
    Spring semester:
    From the beginning of February till June 30.
    Summer session: from July 1 1st till Mid-August (7 weeks).

    Classes are held five days a week (Monday through Friday), four class hours a day (8:00 to 10:00, 10:00 to 12:00am or 1:00 to 3:00, 3:00 to 5:00pm).

    b) Tourist and business courses :

    Scheduled according to the needs and the desires of the student (3 days/week, has evening classes : 5:00 to 7:00.pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm).
    Courses may be offered following a flexible schedule as requested by the student.
    Signing up should be one week in advance.
    8 new course is scheduled to begin on a monthly basis.

    4. ENROLLMENT FORM :

    a) The following documents should be submitted to the Academic secretary of the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies:

    * Application form
    * Detailed curriculum vitae, if Viet Kieu (Overseas Vietnamese), including place of birth, reason why left Vietnam, when, contact address(es) of relatives in Vietnam:
    * 2 recent photographs (not more than a year old, passport size)

    b) Although there is no application deadline, an applicant who is not in Vietnam at the time of application is advised to submit all of the before the proposed arrival in Vietnam .
    documents at least one month from abroad is 40 USD (paid to the Center upon arrival).
    Costs of processing applications.
    c) The student visa will be collected at a Vietnamese Embassy outside Vietnam (selected by the applicant).

    5. EXAMS AND COURSE COMPLETION

    Monthly and final exams are administered to evaluate the degree of achievement in spoken and written Vietnamese. Those who meet the requirements specified below are issued the Certificate of completion (for the Advanced Course) or the Certificate of Attendance (for the completion of Elementary, Low Intermediate or High Intermediate Courses).

    Requirements:

    (a) Attendance 90X of the total class hours.

    (b) Achievement : 70 or more (out of 100) points achieved at final evaluation (Exam fee is USD

    6. COURSE FEES

    a. Regular courses :

    According to class hours desired of the student. Your schedule may cover 5 sessions/week or 3 sessions/week, from 2 periods to 4 periods. The fees are as follows :

    1 class hour (1 class period) = 50 working minutes followed by ten (10) minutes pause.

    Tuition must be paid full at the start of the course. Tuition does not include insurance fees nor course material. Those on a student/scholar visa are to pay tuition for the entire year prior to their course. Tuition after paid will not be refunded on any conditions.

    b) Students participating in a study abroad program in conjunction with the University :
    - The Tuition for one academic semester: (17 weeks each semester) : US$ 920/person.

    - The Tuition for summer session (7 weeks) : US$ 420/person
    - Application fee : US$ 40/person

    c) Tourist courses : Offered according to students' request.

    7. SCHOLARS& POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS :

    In addition to an application for a Vietnam student visa, those who wish to do research and fieldwork are required the followings:
    * Certified copies of passport,transcript of records, certificates and diploma...
    * Detailed description of working program in Vietnam and research proposals (specific topics, objectives, methodology Vietnamese academic advisor....).

    Letter of recommendation (for applicants registered as research students) : 2 recommendations, one from your
    University advisor and one from a Vietnamese professor who specializes in your field of study.
    Approval notification letter from a Vietnamese academic advisor.
    - Fee for advisor and advanced Vietnamese studies for independent study project is 1500 USD per annum.
    - Application fee :40 USD.
    - Tuition for M.
    A. students : 1,400 USD / year.
    - Tuition for Ph.D. candidates : 1,500 USD / year.

    b ACCOMMODATION :

    Those who have our student visa can ask for a room in the University dormitory if space is available. We can also assist in renting houses or rooms. A single room with private toilet costs about 7-8 USD/day. Reservation must be done as soon as possible to facilitate arrangements. A meal costs about 3 USD/day)

    8. HEALTH INSURANCE:

    - It is very desirable for the students to take health insurance before coming to Vietnam because our Center is unable to offer health insurance to foreigners. When students visit a hospital in Vietnam, they have to pay the full fees, and should keep receipts and prescriptions for reimbursement by their health insurance company after arriving back in their country.
